After Friday’s negotiation session for the Shaler Area School District, representatives from both sides felt significant progress was made, and said that details were agreed to in principal.
The two sides met from about 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and worked to try and head off an impending strike date set by the teachers union for Nov. 27.
No tentative agreement was reached yet, said Shaler Superintendent Dr. Don Lee, but a lot of progress was made.
“It’s not done yet,” Lee said. “But we’re feeling better now than we did at the beginning of the day.”
Validia Giddens, chief negotiator for the teachers union, agreed with what Lee said.
“We did agree in principal,” Giddens said. “Any time talks are still going on and both sides are moving, it’s a good thing.”
The two sides will meet again Monday at 9:30 a.m., and both hope to come out of it with a positive result.
Giddens said she hopes to present something to the general membership by Tuesday or Wednesday. The teachers union is required to take 48 hours to look over any proposal before voting on it.

I have the utmost admiration for Shaler teachers and I think the teachers deserve what they want. I have personal experience with Validia Giddens and know that she is an excellent teacher. She taught my son Ben who is ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and worked wonders with him. Teaching is a very tough profession (vocation) and when we put our children into the hands of others for more time than we actually see them in any one given day, I think they should be well compensated. I volunteer teaching at our Church CCD program and that is only for 1 1/2 hours per week, and I know I put in at least that much time as well in lesson planning/preparation so I know their job isn't just "in the classroom."
