Shaler start of school update

Shaler Area School District has sent out and posted updates regarding the start of school. They include:
1. Students in K-8 - No change to the start of school. Your first day is still Monday, September 8, 2008.
2. High School Students (Grades 9-12) - Your first day has been pushed back a couple days.
a. Grades 11-12 will now have their orientation on Wednesday, September 10 and not Friday, Sept. 5.
b. Grades 9-10 will now have their orientation on Thursday, September 11 and not Monday, Sept. 8.
c. Friday, September 12th will now be the first full day for Grades 9-12 and not Wednesday, Sept. 10. read more »

McCandless OKs rezoning for car dealership

Despite community protest, a 2-acre lot in McCandless will be rezoned to allow an auto dealer to unload and park vehicles hundreds of feet from several homes. McCandless Council approved the rezoning Monday night by a vote of 5-2, with Cynthia Potter and Gerald Aufman Jr. dissenting. read more »

Shaler truck driver held for trial in motorcyclist's death

The driver of a pickup truck that rolled down a hill in Etna earlier this month will stand trial for the death of a motorcyclist crushed by a tree on a street below, a judge ruled this morning. The Pittsburgh Trib reports.

Road salt prices rock local budgets

Budgets will be stretched thin and road salt may be put down thinner in North Hills communities facing a significant increase in the cost of the winter commodity. Communities using the contract let by the North Hills Council of Governments will see the cost for road salt increase by 156 percent, from $40.56 per ton to $104.01 per ton, said Marshall Manager Neil McFadden. Jail escapees from Ohio captured in Bellevue

Four men who escaped from a jail in Ohio were captured Monday afternoon after a brief chase and manhunt in Bellevue. The four inmates -- who escaped sometime after midnight Sunday from the Columbiana County Jail near East Liverpool -- were spotted in a stolen car at 1:40 p.m. near Crawford and Kendell avenues, Bellevue police Sgt. Matthew Lucas said. The Pittsburgh Trib has more details.
