Tigers squad ripping up division foes

The North Allegheny boys lacrosse team is running over opponents with a stingy defense and a quick-strike offense. The Tigers have lost only one game this season and that loss was by only one goal.

Despite the near perfect season thus far, Tigers' head coach John Rullan said that there is still some work to be done.

"We are still looking to play 48 minutes and put a whole game together," Rullan said. "But, I am still happy with where the team is."

The team philosophy is defense first, and the Tigers have allowed more than eight goals only once this year, while averaging double-digit scores for themselves.

The team has a core of seniors leading the way with attacker Adam Mills, midfielder Brian Faber, and defenseman Pat Coleman as the core of the team. Junior attacker Grady Wirth is another big scorer for the Tigers.

Rullan said that the team is exceeding expectations this season, and added that right now the Tigers are playing as well as any team out there.

The key will be to maintain the current flow against other powerhouses like Mt. Lebanon, who is a big rival, as well as Seneca Valley, another key division opponent.

"We expect our kids to play at a different speed," Rullan said. "We play a fast-paced style and we are in good shape. If our effort is there, we can play with anyone.

"North Allegheny is building a good tradition here and a lot of credit has to go to our athletic director Bob Bozzuto."

North Allegheny will host Seneca Valley on May 9, at 8 p.m., in a division game. The Tigers will play Pine-Richland on May 14, at Pine-Richland, in another division game.

North Allegheny is currently 11-1 overall and 2-0 in division 1-North action.

Lacrosse, currently a club sport, will be a PIAA sport beginning next season next year.
