Fashion show to benefit library

Wedding season is almost here, and the members of the historic Glenshaw Public Library are celebrating by hosting a vintage bridal fashion show.

The show will take place at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1:30 p.m., at McFadden Hall in the Glenshaw Valley Presbyterian Church on Saturday.

The show will feature 35 dresses from the 1800s through the 1970s. The dresses will be modeled by girls from Addis Dance Studios and Dance Magic, the ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau of Duquesne University and Shaler students.

Ardis Gibson, who helped organize the show, says she's seen this type of fundraiser done by churches, which have been well attended.

Tickets for the show are $8, with all proceeds going toward the Glenshaw Public Library. A Chinese auction will also be held with roughly 15 baskets to be bid off.

Many of the dresses in the show were donated by the women's club of the Glenshaw Valley Presbyterian Church, and some required a lot of work to get them ready for the show.

"I can't wait for these ladies to see the gowns," she says.

One of Gibson's closest friends is letting her dress from the 1970s be worn for the show. Even after careful storage, she opened the box and found out the material was all yellow and brown. Now, Gibson says, "It's snow white."

The best part of the dresses, Gibson says, is that each one has a fascinating story behind it that will be shared during the show.

The dresses also represent the social thinking of the times. The 1940s dresses have heavy military influence with broad shoulders and a lot of buttons, while the 1950s dresses are ultra-feminine, which symbolizes the women leaving the factories to go back to being housewives and mothers.

One of the more difficult parts of putting the show together was finding girls who could fit into the old dresses.

"We had to have fittings for the 23- and 24-inch waists," she says. "Even small girls today are around 26 or 27 inches."

Seating is limited for the event and Gibson encourages people to buy their tickets soon so they don't miss out on the show.

"This is an astonishing collection," she says.
