Martinez places seventh in PIAA Championships, Harold eighth

The 2007-08 season will go down in history as one of the greatest seasons in North Hills wrestling history. The Indians won medal after medal, and led by Alexander "Gator" Martinez and Adam Harold, the team reached new heights.

Both Martinez and Harold represented the Indians at the PIAA tournament. Martinez nabbed an eighth-place finish and a space on the medal platform and Harold came within one win of joining him.

"It was very tough," said Jose Martinez, North Hills head coach. "It is three brutal days of wrestling, and we went in with high expectations.

"It does not always work out the way you want it to, because we were looking for higher seeds. There are a lot of high quality wrestlers out there."

The Indians have not been represented at the state tournament since 2000, so Jose Martinez was happy to be there.

"It was nice to be there with my son and Adam, who I coached since he was little," Jose Martinez said. "It was very rewarding to be able to put the medal around my son's neck."

Alexander Martinez was equally thrilled to share the experience with his father.

"This has been a goal of mine," he said. "It was really great to place at states, and my dad is proud of me and to be able to do this for the program is really great."

He added that each match got harder and harder.

"Seeing the level of competition I did, showed me that Pennsylvania has the most quality wrestlers," Alexander Martinez said.

"Pennsylvania is the toughest and it is extremely, extremely difficult to make it to states let alone place. It is nothing like the WPIAL tournament. You have got to be prepared and ready for everyone. You can't look past anyone here."
