More than 200 students have art showcased at event

North Allegheny Senior High School kicked off their annual NASH Art Show last week with an opening night bash that rivaled previous years.

The art show started in 2001 as a way to showcase the junior and senior art students' work. This year, more than 200 students displayed pieces in the high school's foyer.

"It seems the word's got around," said Frances Hawbaker, an art teacher at North Allegheny Senior High.

Friends, family, community members, North Allegheny alumni and school officials packed the high school's cafeteria to view art work from the school's advanced placement studio art classes, honors art classes, pottery, multimedia, sculpture, photography, and drawing and painting classes.

The opening night event also included pottery, sculpture and drawing demonstrations, and performances from the student band Streight Ahead Trio and the NA Break-Dancing Club.

As the event gets bigger each year, Hawbaker said, it will make an even bigger impact on the students involved.

"The thing I've come to realize is it's a really memorable event for them," she said. "It's worth it because it's so memorable for them."
